Blackford High School has seen the introduction of several new classes this year. Agriculture, taught by Shelbi Louck, is one of them. This is the first agriculture-based class that BHS has offered, and it will pave the way for a number of other classes that will go into more detail about different farming topics.
The class gives an overview of the various aspects of agricultural including food, animal, and plant sciences. Students taking the class can expect a traditional class setting with labs throughout the year, some even involve food.
“We eat a lot of food in the class,” Louck said.
The goals of the class might seem straightforward, but Louck made a point to explain some other goals that the class will offer. While the students will learn about the basics of agriculture, they will also learn leadership and other business related skills.
“I want [the students] to learn where their food comes from,” Louck said.
The class has been well received by Louck’s fifth period, who could collectively agree that it is very hands on and fun.”

“We put the ag in swag,” senior Kyle Mackey said.

This is Louck’s first time teaching, and she has a lot planned for the year. Louck attended Purdue University and is originally from Jay County. In addition to being the new agriculture teacher, Louck is the adviser of the Future Farmers of America club, which is an agricultural leadership group. This is the first year that the high school has supported an FFA chapter since 19.
Louck wanted to recommend the class and the club to any students interested in careers based around agriculture or not.
“You don’t have to be a farmer to take the class,” Louck said.
