Teddy bears! Fluffy, cute, adorable, toys that everyone loves and is overused during Valentines Day. There is a story behind everything, including teddy bears! Let me tell you a story about President Theodore Roosevelt and a tied up black bear. This all started on November 14, 1902 where Mississippi’s governor, Andrew H. Longino, invited Theodore on a hunting trip for bears. After awhile of looking, unlike the other hunters, Theodore had not found a single bear!

So Roosevelt’s assistants including Holt Collier, a born slave, and former Confederate cavalryman, cornered and tied a black bear to a willow tree. Then they called for Theodore to come to the tree and once he arrived told him to shoot the bear. Theodore saw this as unsportsmanlike and refused to shoot the bear.

The news of this event sparked a cartoon to be made by Clifford Berryman, who wrote political cartoons. Once this was published this comic sparked the mind of a man named Michtom, who owned a candy shop. He asked Theodore for permission to use his name and he mass produced the toy bears, respectfully named, teddy bears!

Now that you know the story of teddy bears, why not go get yourself a teddy bear, or find one that is lightly used and throw it? Why you ask? It is fun to throw stuffed animals and if you throw a teddy bear during the Jay County game you will feel good! All of the teddy bears thrown during the varsity halftime during the home game on January 26th, 2019 will be donated!

The bears will be donated to Blackford County Law Enforcement Officers and IU Health Blackford Hospital so that they can give the teddy bears to children who have been through a crisis, suffered a loss, or are going through an illness. Also, some of the teddy bears will be given to the hospital so that children suffering illness get a smile in their day! In order to give children, these teddy bears your new, or gently used bear must be placed into a plastic bag. During the basketball game against Jay County in the varsity halftime, you will throw your teddy bears onto the court!

Join The Teddy Bear Toss on January 26th, 2019 during the varsity halftime to not only have fun at a basketball game but give back to those in need! Make sure to put your teddy in a plastic bag and watch as they fly onto the court!
