Disgaea is a strategy role-playing game created and developed by Nippon Ichi software. There are six games in the Disgaea series not including the re-releases for other systems, mostly handhelds. There are Disgaeas one through five then an anniversary game, Disgaea D2: a Brighter Darkness, this game was before Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance, and a direct sequel to Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (the first game). The disgaea games are fun, strategy games with a great story. The story is a fantastic blend of serious and humorous, with great characters and character development. The Disgaea games takes place in three worlds mainly a place called the Netherworld, the world where demons live. The Netherworld has enough problems by itself, but sometimes it has problems with the other two worlds, the human world and more frequently Celestia, the home of angels.

In Disgaea: Hour of Darkness you follow overlord (ruler of a Netherworld) Laharl, as he fights to take and keep his throne, after his father, King Krichevskoy, dies while Laharl is in a long slumber. Accompanied by his disobedient vassal Etna and a love freak angel Flonne, they fight for the overlord’s crown. In Disgaea 2: Cursed memories you follow a human named Adell as he tries to free the human world of a curse that turned them into demons (Adell was not changed by the curse). With the daughter of overlord Zenon name Rozalin and her servant Tink, and the support of his family who all wish to regain the human forms, he goes in search of overlord Zenon to free the humans from his curse. Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice is set in a Netherworld school, Evil Academy where students are expected to skip classes and ignore assignments. Moa, the son of the Netherworld’s overlord and a highly intelligent demon, wants to overthrow his father. He decides to become a hero, based one what he learned by comic books. His childhood rival Raspberyl, Evil Academy’s top delinquent (this means she does show up to class and does all her assignments, volunteer, etc), follows him trying to stop him from being a hero, to protect her image as top delinquent. Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten takes place in Hades, a place in the Netherworld where human souls are tuned in to prinnies and undergo training so the can atone for their sins. This story follows the vampire Valvatorez and his loyal werewolf servant Fenrich, as they try to stop the Corrupterment, a Netherworld government, from exterminating prinnies. Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness is a direct sequel of the first game and follows overlord Laharl, Etna, and fallen angel Flonne again, except with Laharl’s angel sister Sicily. Laharl is still not respected by the demons of his Netherworld. While trying to gain the respect of the the demons Yuie flowers ,a flower from Celestia, start growing, and the demons blame Laharl. Laharl and company go to solve the mystery. In Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance you follow Killia and a group of overlords from different Netherworlds: Seraphina the overlord of Gorgeous, Red Magnus the overlord of Scorching Flame, Usalia the overlord of Toto Bunny, Zeroken the overlord of his heart, and Christo the “overlord” of “Certain Giant” (a Netherworld that doesn’t exist). They band together and build an army  to stop the Demon Emperor Void Dark and the Lost Army.

The games are all made in the same style. The story is told before and after stages. In the stages you take turns with the enemy, moving, attacking, etc. You can use the main characters from the stories or characters made at the dark assembly.  There are two types of characters, humanoids and monsters. The characters made at the dark assembly unlock new and/or stronger classes as you continue to use them. Characters can equip four pieces of gear and one weapon except in Disgaea 5, they can have a secondary weapon or with the right evility (evil ability) a character can dual wield weapons. Humanoids use swords, spears, axes, guns, fists, bows, and staffs. In Disgaea D2 they can also have books. Monsters, however, can only use two types of weapons, special monster only weapons, one for melee and one for casting. Monsters do get their own unique special move and also spells, unique and generic spells. Humanoids get specials based on their weapon and their weapon proficiency. They also get both unique and generic spells. In Disgaea 5, humanoids get their own unique specials like the monster, but the humanoids don’t get as many. Monsters can do some other special things, they can (depending on which game you play) magic change, fuse, or be mounted. Magic change lets your monsters become temporary weapons for your humanoids. Fusion lets two monsters temporarily become one large monster. Mounting allows humanoids to ride monsters. Humanoids can lift and throw, which can help someone get somewhere, get an enemy away, move objects, or if you don’t throw you can perform tower attacks. Monsters can’t throw things but throughout the games they have been given other similar things such as mounting, bouncing, and mon-toss.

The Disgaea games are fun strategy RPG games. With great characters, both main characters and otherwise, and fantastic storytelling. Nippon Ichi software did a great job on these games and hopefully won’t stop for a long time. If you haven’t played one of these great game you should give it a try. The Netherworld awaits.
