School uniforms in public schools are becoming more and more common. The idea for school uniforms in public schools came up about 10 to 20 years ago. Most people say that school uniforms violate a students freedom of expression, is that okay for a public school to do? Is that overstepping their boundaries and individualities of the students there? Let’s find out what some of the students here at Blackford High School think. I asked a few of the freshman students ten questions to get a deeper look on school uniforms other than what I personally think.

But in my personal opinion, I like and dislike school uniforms. I like the idea of them because I believe it could possibly stop some of the bullying happening to students at school about the way they dress. I dislike school uniforms because it is taking away the students personal voice in the way they dress.

School uniforms have pros and cons to them, some people love the idea of school uniforms and other people hate them and will not wear them. What side are you on? The three students I asked questions to mostly sided with the people who do not like the idea of school uniforms. “ I do not like school uniforms whatsoever, it is taking away the students personal voice! ” stated Raegan Logan strongly. That got me thinking so I asked some other students what they thought about school uniforms. “ School uniforms are way too formal and very unnecessary, they are just a waste of money for everyone, plus the school would have to force students into wearing them, because they are not going to want to.” stated a very opinionated Kylee Darnell.

School uniforms might make students feel like all their freedom is being taken away and that may cause students to act out against the administration and do things they would not do if they had that freedom. “I would be very upset if us students had to wear school uniforms, I would feel as if all my freedom is being ripped from me.” stated Kailan Willis.

I do indeed get what these students are saying but a school uniform might not be such a bad idea, because it could give our school a sense of pride. But I do also see all the other points our students are making about it taking away our freedom because it does do that. “ If the school was to make us wear school uniforms I would not fight against the school administration in a violent way, I would just simply do a silent protest like a petition” said all three of the girls. A petition is a good way to go against the school administration because it is a silent unharmful protest and if you have enough signatures they can not deny it. Since our school already has a strict dress code what would they say for uniforms? Would they not let us add little accessories? “ If they were to make us wear school uniforms we should most definitely be able to add accessories or wear our hair how we want to! ” said a very determined Kailan Willis.

I then asked the same students I have been interviewing if school uniforms would be better than the dress code we have at school, I was surprised with the answers I got. Raegan said “ If had to choose between school uniforms and our dress code I would pick uniforms because the school dress codes here are just plain ridiculous.” I was not expecting that kind of response from this person. Kylee and Kailan said “ They would rather deal with the strict dress codes.”

My overall outcome writing this would have to be that school uniforms would not do well at this school and that they aren’t a good idea for a public school. School uniforms are indeed taking away a person’s freedom with how they dress and sometimes clothes are the only way a person will express themselves.
