Doki Doki Literature Club: Gaming Review

"Is it love if I take you, or is it love if I let you go." Monika-DDLC

Doki Doki Literature or DDLC for short is a psychological horror/romance game created by Team Salvato and is downloadable on Steam. This game is set in Japan and features four different girls that you can try to date by expressing your love with horrible poems. Each of the four girls has their own routes that you can explore as you play the game. The girl’s names are Monika, Yuri, Natsuki, and Sayori; Sayori is your childhood friend, Natsuki is a pink loving manga reader, Yuri is a timid book reader and last but not least Monika is the club president.

While playing through this I game I realized that Doki Doki Literature Club is a masterpiece of a game using gameplay elements that not many other games use. But not only that Doki Doki Literature Club managed to create a game full of easter eggs and make a deceivingly cute dating simulator into a truly scary horror game. Doki Doki Literature Club makes the player search for special poems and notes hidden in the actual game files. As you play Doki Doki Literature Club the game starts to get darker covering mature themes such as suicide and cutting resulting in some of the game files being deleted in front of your eyes. This gameplay element makes Doki Doki Literature a game that is fun to play more than once to try to find secrets you may not have seen before.

Doki Doki Literature Club rewards players that play the game more than once by giving the player a secret, good ending if they unlock all of the cutscenes. Overall Doki Doki Literature Club is a game that can be enjoyed by many different age groups even though it covers mature themes. Playing through Doki Doki Literature Club actually helped me better understand some issues that people suffer through every day. For example, Sayori your childhood friend in the game suffers from depression but this is slowly revealed in the game. Watching how Sayori slowly becomes even more depressed not wanting to be around you or having trouble getting out of bed, really helped me understand depression better. Doki Doki Literature Club helps express some issues and how it affects people and their family all while raising awareness for issues such as depression.

Overall Doki Doki Literature Club is an amazing game combining unique and interesting gameplay with deep storytelling. This game may not be like other horror games but if you are willing to look deep into this game and its characters you will find some truly horrifying ideas and concepts. I highly recommend playing Doki Doki Literature if you want a different kind of game that does not involve first-person shooting. On a scale of one to ten Doki Doki Literature Club gets a ten in my book mostly because of its memorable characters and deep story.
